Real Wedding: Lindsay & Scott’s Winter Wedding

Hello friends! We know that the holidays have passed and that you are probably SO ready to put them behind you, but we just couldn’t resist sharing this incredible winter wedding with you!  We also know that a lot of you brides who were either engaged around the holidays or planning a December or winter wedding in 2012 are going to love the inspiration from this beautiful winter wonderland Newport wedding!

Lindsay and Scott’s nuptials at OceanCliff in Newport was simply perfection and our girls at Snap! Photography were there to beautifully capture every precious moment.

A little history from OceanCliff’s website if you did not already know this fantastic Newport wedding venue:  OceanCliff Resort was designed and built in 1864 by the architectural firm Peabody & Stearns from Boston who designed the original Breakers and Doris Duke’s Rough Point both located on elegant Bellevue Avenue. A wealthy industrialist and member of Mrs. Astor’s 400 Club originally used OceanCliff as a private summer residence during the Gilded Age. The estate remained a private summer home until 1954, when it was sold and later converted into an oceanfront retreat to host lavish parties and society affairs.

A message from the Bride: I’m originally from Buffalo, and my husband, Scott, is from Bedford, MA, and we were living in Boston when we got engaged.  We knew we wanted quieter, more quaint setting for our wedding, so Newport was a natural choice.  Believe it or not, December was a natural choice for us too.  We both have winter birthdays and love skiing, snow, and the holidays.  There were a few naysayers to the idea, though….upon hearing the date, my dad said, “you know that’s right before Christmas, right?”  Also, I think I saw Trish cringe when I mentioned December.  She doesn’t love cold weather :). But anyway, the idea was basically to throw the best holiday party ever for our friends and family and call it our wedding reception.

We chose Oceancliff because it feels like a grand old house (which, of course, it is), but it’s not overwhelming or ornate.  The ballroom is beautiful, but what really drew us in was the smaller rooms with the fireplaces, and the staircase.  We went to see it for the first time in August, and it was so easy to picture those fireplaces and the staircase draped with holiday garlands.  That image sealed the deal for us.  Our entire wedding party stayed there for the weekend; the staff at Oceancliff was nice enough to let everyone hang out around the fire into the wee hours after the reception.  The bridesmaids were in their pajamas!  It felt like a party at home.

The flowers were Stoneblossom, and I made a lot of the smaller detail items myself (hence all the research!)  I made  the menu cards, table cards, seating cards, and programs.  The table cards were fun; I named the tables after Newport landmarks and used a wintertime photo of each for the card.

Lastly, I’ll just mention a thing or two about….the trees.  Those three Christmas trees we set up behind the head table?  That was my one ‘non-negotiable-i-have-to-have-it’ item.  (Every bride gets one, right?!)  We couldn’t find a place that rented them, so we just bought them.  Transporting, assembling, disassembling, and storing them was a nightmare, but in the end they were so worth it.  They gave the ballroom the most amazing, sparkling light – I’ll never forget it.  Literally, I never will, because now we use one of them as our Christmas tree at home every year.

I’m having a Jan 2013 wedding at Oceancliff. I LOVE the incorporation of snowflakes throughout this wedding – it’s just enough! I really love the menu cards as well. Would it be possible to share the information of how the bride made them?

    • Newport Wedding Glam says ///

      Hi Emma,

The bride designed and produced the menu cards herself, she does design work, calligraphy, and event styling/coordination on a freelance basis. I will email you the brides contact information – she would be thrilled to work with you :)

Could I also have the bride’s contact information. I love the menu cards and the table cards. I would also like to know the height of the trees behind the head table. I love the look and the photos. Thank you.
